When was the last time you found yourself at a loss for words when discussing taboo subjects like sex and prostitution, which society often considers off-limits? Well, for me it was during my placement training. I was supposed to give a public statement about the subject of prostitution and I got stuck. Despite having a considerable understanding of the subject and knowing important points, everything seemed to turn upside down. While stage fright may have played a role, I genuinely believe there's more to it. It was not that bright spot of a memory in my mind but sometimes it reveal itself.
Today I watched a bold and beautiful movie titled “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” and this reignited that memory that had long been dormant in my mind.
Some people may travel throughout the world after retirement, and some may engage in adventure sports But Nancy decided to have the fruit of the poisonous tree which she thought was taboo throughout her whole life. Nancy was a strict schoolteacher who lived up to the morals of an orthodox society. She had only one sexual partner, her husband, and very much boring life. She hadn't had an orgasm in her whole life. She used to fake it in an odd way with a bit of theatrics and I find it really cute and sad. Emma Thompson, who acted as Nancy Stokes brilliantly portrayed even the smallest details of nervous and excited Nancy Stockes.
According to Nancy, Leo Grande was not only aesthetically pleasing but also exuded a gentle demeanor and professionalism. Sensing Nancy's nervousness, Leo made efforts to calm her with comforting words and a glass of wine. Leo's character showcased unapologetic nobility and professionalism. Initially, due to her old-school Catholic education, Nancy speculated that Leo might be in his line of work due to personal circumstances or low self-esteem. However, Leo passionately spoke about the inherent nobility of his profession, leaving a lasting impression of admiration on Nancy and me.
There were 4 sessions/meets. And all four are different in different ways. Nancy’s nervousness diminished as time progressed. Leo talks about his odd clientele. He made it clear it's not the sex that he is selling but the company. One of his clients pays him to watch tv while holding hand, and the one who cannot walk want him to bathe her and have dinner, the point is, he doesn't judge his clients' motives or intentions.
I am not going to spoil the fun by talking more about the story. The whole 1hr 30 minutes of this movie made me rethink a lot of aspects, including the nobility of sex work as a profession. In a way, it contributes a lot to a healthy and progressive society. Maybe it was my admiration for the character of Leo, His gentleness and professionalism. Nancy’s character made me realize the need for self-pleasure and how it should be a positive priority for individuals.
It’s always good to have a fresh perspective on life and people and I am glad it happening to me via books and movies.
